Teaching Philosophy
I love the work I do. As an educational therapist, I feel privileged to benefit from the rewarding challenges of my profession. Each new client presents new possibilities waiting to be uncovered, and I welcome the opportunities to help students thrive. All individuals are unique. It is my job to encourage and support my clients so they can maximize their gifts, understand their weaknesses, and enhance their academic skills.A strength-based approach using research-based interventions allows individuals to develop compensatory skills that will serve them throughout their lifetime. I remain flexible while implementing an individually tailored intervention plan in an atmosphere that inspires trust, introspection, and self-improvement. A positive mindset, a compassionate attitude, and a touch of humor serve to facilitate the process.
A Day in Jeanette's Practice
I have practiced as an educational therapist for over twenty years. I am very lucky to have found my career early in life and that it is as challenging and rewarding as it is. Today, I talked with a fifth grader about the Civil War, with a college student about sexual dimorphism, with a fifth grader about Susan B. Anthony's contributions to the women's suffrage movement, with an eleventh grader about Woodrow Wilson's financial reforms, and with an eleventh grader about how weather can contribute to the development of mood in a short story. I also read the story La Princesa y El Rocío with a third grader and helped her write a story about how Carola, my dog, and another dog, Sofia, helped save a dolphin that had been captured in a net. That was just today in a span of 13 hours!!! I am proud to have the heart of a teacher, a heart that I inherited from my mom who spent over thirty years teaching. Needless to say, I am exhausted after such a long day working in school and in my private practice, but I wouldn't have it any other way! 10/30/2014
